Utah Salt Lake County Gang Graffiti Study basic questions

    In what manner might the study of gang graffiti in Salt Lake County offer an analyses of overall gang presence and related crime activity in the region, surrounding areas and nationwide. With the study in mind limited to gang graffiti will it lead to evidence of emerging, hybridizing, or camouflaging of gang subcultures? In what manner are the existing management strategies for street gangs promoting or inhibiting the development of criminal justice reform for the residents of Salt Lake County and its’ different municipalities?



    Why are there in some instances two or more colors in just a single graffiti location?



    Is there significance to viewing the two or more colors in just a single graffiti location?



    In looking at this from a historical perspective, does it mean that gangs are hybridizing, and camouflaging activity?



    How do you determine from graffiti a gang alliance in a given region?



    How can a researcher determine the ethnic or racial composition of gang graffiti?



    Is gang graffiti in higher income neighborhoods the same as gang graffiti found in lower income neighborhoods?



    Is gang graffiti near new construction sites of particular significance?



    How can you distinguish “[wanna be]” gang member or affiliate graffiti and vandalism acts from active members of street gangs?



    Why is it necessary to analyze gang graffiti at all in the criminal justice application?



    Is gang graffiti always stylized based upon gang affiliation?



    Are there ways to tell the sexual identity or ranking of an individual moniker -graffiti artist?



    Is there a way to tell if one individual or more contributed to the graffiti within a gang at a particular location?



    Are there ways to tell the sexual identity or ranking of a group of graffiti artists – members of a [tagging crew] ?



    Why are there frequent gang graffiti incidences on public structures within city and state infrastructure such as public buildings, libraries, and schools?



    In terms of graffiti analysis is it reputable for crime analysis and criminal prosecution?

    Is gang graffiti in abundance a definite sign of upcoming problems for a neighborhood in the future?



    What is the significance in linguistic terms of gang graffiti?



    What can be learned about the specific placement of gang graffiti in a community?



    Why is gang graffiti not taken seriously by many in mainstream society?



    Is there a need for more public awareness with regards to graffiti?



    Is there a need to process and then remove gang graffiti from vandalism sites?



    Why is gang graffiti present in high traffic locations and very public places thru which many people pass by?



    Is there a reason for natural landmarks, and trees to be vandalized with graffiti in some locations and in other areas for there to be very little or any marking on the same type of landmarks and trees?



    Does single color gang graffiti always indicate gang activities and gang presence?



    Are murals and graffiti artists always associated and affiliated with street gangs because of the fact that they usually spray structures and trailers?



    Is there a distinct personal handwriting variable, similar to human handwriting individuality that can be used for criminal prosecution and verification of writers identity?



    Why are schools frequent targets of gang graffiti, even when the school is no longer used for the purpose of education?



    Why do street gangs interact differently than prison gangs as commonly seen in gang research related documents?
